Helsinki-Kushyrgy

2012,

collaborative 2-channel video installation,

Helsinki-Kushyrgy is a video installation made in collaboration with Julia Kuprina. The installation consists of two short films, which have been edited using the same video material: videos shoot during a trip to Kuprina’s home region in Russia, and found footage from the region. The Russian politics dealing with cultural minorities and the importance of saving the indigenous culture of the region are touched in the films, but from two different perspectives: Kuprina’s is a trip home to see loved ones, mine to a place where I am an outsider with a Western filmmaker’s gaze.
